The quicker you address a stain, the better chance you have of removing it completely. Fresh stains are much easier to treat than ones that have set into the fabric.
Grab a clean cloth or paper towel and gently blot the stain to lift away excess liquid. Avoid rubbing, which can push the stain deeper into the fibers and make it harder to remove.
For most stains, run cold water through the back of the fabric to flush out as much of the stain as possible. Skip the hot water—heat can set many stains permanently.
Apply a small amount of liquid detergent or stain remover directly to the stain. Gently work it in with your fingers or a soft brush, then let it sit for 5–10 minutes before washing.
After washing, always check to see if the stain is gone. If it’s still visible, repeat the process. Heat from the dryer can lock stains into place, making them nearly impossible to remove.
